Cootamundra U3A

About Us

Early in 2009, following a notice about U3A in The Cootamundra Herald, Allison Aspden, the Librarian at the time, chaired a meeting in The Stephen Ward Rooms. The meeting was to judge interest in forming a group in Cootamundra. The response was enthusiastic but there were no offers to setup the group or take any executive positions.

Two informal lectures were held in March 2010, again to gauge the interest. Ron Kirkland ran a session, “Words, Words. Words” and Stan Bongers presented “Human Behaviour, Understanding the Situation”.  Each session was attended by about 30 people and followed by afternoon tea. Cootamundra U3A

After this interest a meeting was held on 17 May 2010 to formally elect a Committee. Wason Mactier was the Chair, Allison Aspden was the Course Co-ordinator and Helen Hamilton was the Secretary/Treasurer.
Upon the advice given by Cecily Butcher, the District Co-ordinator of U3A Network from Orange, the Cootamundra U3A was formally started.

The first course was Cryptic Crosswords with Betti Punnett and the first formal talk was Machu Picchu given by Ann Wilcox. The first Annual General Meeting was held on 11 August 2010 when it was decided to make membership $25 per person and $40 per couple per annum.

Our U3A has gone on from strength to strength and continues to be an important part of the Cootamundra community.
